Nathuli or Nath has appertained to a big nose ring drafted in pure gold and the beautiful monuments Kundan. In Uttarakhand, Nath is called “ Nathuli ” Nath is one similar garnishment that gives a distinct identity to the women of Uttarakhand and enhances their appearance. In the olden days, the women of Uttarakhand put on Nath every day in the morning and took them out at night, It was delicate for them to work wearing such a heavy Nath daily, and that’s why the weight and size of the Nath kept getting lower. Now in the moment’s time, the women of Uttarakhand wear Nath only on special occasions, like marriages, especially in haldi rituals, pooja, and numerous more essential events. On the marriage day of a girl, the motherly uncle of the bridegroom gifts the Nath at the time of Ganesh pooja. It's believed that the size and quantity of gold in expensive monuments indicate the family status. Uttarakhand state has two corridors, Garhwal and Kumaon. Uttarakhandi Nath is also substantially of two types.
Tehri Nath
Nath is notorious in hilly regions, and Tehri’s nath is most notorious in Uttarakhand. When a Garhwali bride shows up in her wedding dress, the observers turn their heads to regard the most prominent garnishment of Garhwal Tehri Nath, known as ‘ Nathuli ’ in Garhwali.
The Tehri nath design is more intricate as compared to the Kumaoni nath. It is often passed down through generations and is considered a valuable family heirloom.
The Tehri Nath is typically modelled in the shape of a crescent moon and enhanced with intricate designs and patterns decorated with pearls and other precious stones.
Kumaoni Nath
On the other hand, the Kumaoni nath has a more simple and elegant design. It is smaller in size and made of silver or brass.
A massive piece of gold jewellery called a Kumaoni Nath can be worn in the left nostril. The Kumaoni Nath, unlike the Garhwali Nath, does not have extensive work done on it; instead, it is simple yet lovely, which attracts people's attention. Women used to wear nathuli daily in the past. Since it was difficult to work while wearing such a large nath, younger generations have substituted more manageable, smaller naths or laungs (nose-legs). Although many Pahadi women may embrace the ethnic and luxurious Kumaoni Nath in marriages and other social situations, the enormous traditional design hasn't lost its appeal.
In conclusion, Tehri and Kumaoni Nath in Uttarakhand culture and the art of making these nose rings have been passed down from generation to generation. The intricate designs and patterns on the Tehri nath are made by skilled artisans using transitional techniques honed over the centuries. The Tehri and Kumaoni Nath designs are an integral part of the traditional Uttarakhand attire for women. These nose rings are not only a symbol of marital status and beauty but also represent the cultural heritage of Uttarakhand.
